OKC Barons Ice Installation

On September 19, 2011 ice was installed in the Cox Convention Center in preparation for the Oklahoma City Barons 2011-2012 season. I set up a camera to take a still photo every 12 seconds all day to create a time lapse video. In all there were around 4000 photos taken. The video is available for viewing below.

OKC Barons Ice Girl Tryouts

The OKC Barons held tryouts for the Ice Girls for the 2011-12 season on Saturday, August 20th. Twenty-two girls attended the tryouts. This event was quite different for me but it was interesting to watch. All of the attendees are quite talented. The judges should have a difficult time deciding who will make the team. Below are a few photos from the event.

The day started with the girls checking in and filling out paperwork.

Once all of the paperwork was complete, the candidates entered the judging room for instructions.

Once the instructions were complete, the girls entered the room one at a time. They were asked questions by the judges and then had to perform for one minute.

Once everyone had visited with the judges, they were divided into groups and had to perform together for about a minute.

Before concluding, everyone was given one last opportunity to ask questions.

OKC Barons vs Lake Erie

On Saturday, October 16 and Tuesday, October 19 the Oklahoma City Barons played the Lake Erie Monsters. The team started off slow on Saturday and found themselves down 3-0 early in the 2nd period. They took control of the game and came back to beat the Monsters 4-3.

That same level of play continued for the game against the Monsters on Tuesday. The Barons earned their first shutout in franchise history by beating Monsters 3-0 with Martin Gerber in net. The shutout earned Gerber the first star of the game honor.

OKC Barons vs Chicago, Houston

The OKC Barons played their second game of opening weekend against the Chicago Wolves on Sunday October 10. While the Barons played much better they ended up losing the game 2-1. With the massive improvements from game 1 to game 2 it was obvious that this team would be much better once they had some practice time all together.

The Barons were back in action again on Friday, October 15 against the Houston Aeros. After a week of practice together, the team looked much better. They were able to force overtime where Houston managed a win. Even though they lost, the overtime loss gave the team their first standings point.

OKC Barons Inaugural Game

Saturday, October 9th was the first game in the history of the Oklahoma City Barons. The Edmonton Oilers kept most of the players in their training camp until the deadline so the Barons only ended up having one full practice with the opening night roster prior to the inaugural game. Unfortunately the OKC Barons struggled against the Houston Aeroes and fell 6-1. A total of 9818 fans were in attendance for the inaugural game.

OKC Barons Blue/White Scrimmage

Last night the Oklahoma City Barons played a scrimmage game. The training camp group was divided into two teams and they played a full game. It was great to see a professional hockey game in person again. I am now looking forward to the opening night game on Saturday, October 9.

This morning the OKC Barons held their second on-ice session of training camp. The drills and the scrimmage were more intense than day 1. Below are some photos from the session.

OKC Barons Training Camp

On Monday, September 27 the Oklahoma City (OKC) Barons started their training camp in preparation for their inaugural season. While many of the players who will be on the opening night roster are still in Edmonton with the Oilers, there were plenty of players in camp. Here are some of my photos.

OKC Barons Ice Installation

On Tuesday, September 14, a crew began the process of making ice in the Cox Convention Center in preparation for the upcoming OKC Barons hockey season. The process is a long and tedious one as every little detail can affect the quality of the ice. Supervising the installation of the ice was Dan Craig (on the right), the NHL Director of Facilities and Operations.

I arrived after lunch when the ice was prepared for the lines to be painted. String was laid on the ice to mark the locations for all of the lines. The crew carefully hand-painted all of the lines.

After the lines were painted, the logo locations were determined and they were placed in the proper places. Once the logos were verified to be in the proper locations, they were sealed in place by spraying them with water so they would not move when water was added to build the the thickness of the ice.

Below is a view of the arena after the logos were sealed but prior to building up the ice.

Friday Afternoon Soccer

Both Oklahoma Christian soccer teams played games against the UT Brownsville Scorpions on Friday afternoon. The men lost in regulation while the women lost in double-overtime.
